Data Sufficiency Puzzle Test

Data Sufficiency : this topic tests the knowledge of basic math , facts and skills along with reasoning, analytical, and problem-solving abilities in a candidate. Each data sufficiency item presents you with a question. You do not actually have to find the answer to the problem; instead, your challenge is to decide whether or not the information presented along with the question would be sufficient to allow you to answer the question.

Approach : Solve the questions step by step. First, try to find the answer using information in first statement, then try only second, and finally try combining the information in both.

Direction : In each of the following problems, there is one question and two or three statements are given below the questions. You have to decide whether the data given in the statements is sufficient to answer the question. Read all the statements carefully and find which of the statements is/are sufficient to answer the given questions. Choose the correct alternative in each question.

You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements is sufficient to answer the question, and then give your answer accordingly.

  • Only I is sufficient.
  • Only II is sufficient.
  • Both I and II are required.
  • Both I and II are not sufficient.
  • Question 1: Four subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology - were taught in four consecutive periods of one hour each starting from 8.00 a.m. At what time was the Chemistry period scheduled ?

  • I. Mathematics period ended at 10.00 a.m., which was preceded by Biology.
  • II. Physics was schedules in the last period
  • III. Mathematics period was immediately followed by Chemistry.
  • (a)  Only I                 (b) Either I only or II only                        (c) Only II               (d)  Only II and III      (e) Only I and either II or III

    Answer : (e) :

  • From I and II, we conclude that Mathematics period began at 9.00 a.m., Biology period began at 8.00 a.m. and Physics period began at 11 a.m. So, the Chemistry period began at 10.00 a.m.
  • From I and III, we conclude that Mathematics period ended and Chemistry period began at 10.00 a.m.
